Continuing the U/U International Theological Dialogue

By UUA International Resources

In November 2007 the UUA's International Resources Office sponsored a "Skypecast" that sought to continue the international theological dialogue among Unitarians, Universalists and Unitarian Universalists. On this occasion the presenter was Rev. Nihal Attanayake, director of the Faith and Action Department of the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Philippines (UUCP). Nihal began by sharing prepared remarks addressing three questions:
  1. What is the basic theological “grounding” of your church group?
  2. Are there emerging theological issues for your church group?
  3. What does your church group believe U/Uism shares internationally?
The presentation was followed by questions posed by participants in the SkypeCast and responses from Rev. Attanayake and Rev. Rebecca Sienes. Rev. Sienes is the former president of the UUCP. A text copy of Rev. Attanayake's prepared remarks is available. And, recordings of the Skypecast are available in segments: Rev. Attanyake's prepared remarks Rev. Attanayake's response to a question about interfaith dialogue in the Philippines Rev. Attanayake's response to a question about UUism in Manilla. Rev. Attanayake's response to a question about government involvement with the UUCP Rev. Attanayake's response to a question about the history of church/state relationships in the Philippines Rev. Sienes's further response to the question about the history of church/state relationships. Final comments from Rev. Sienes. The international engagement of UU congregations takes many forms. At the UUA's international resources office we seek to promote the importance of exploring "theological grounding" as a best practice for all international engagement. When we are engaged in partnership work with Unitarian/Universalists in different parts of the world, theological exploration is all the more important and powerfully beneficial. Information about future skypecasts is available on the international resources pages of uua.org. All are welcome, please join us.
