I am the elder brother of Ron and feel so privileged to write in support of his elegant statement. I also have visited and traveled The Island, ever since the first time in 1970 when our parents, my wife Karen and I visited the old homestead near Londonderry and the yet older homestead in County Donegal that supposedly goes back to 1690 or so (from Scotland).

Since then I acquired about 6-8 very close friends from the 'South' when I was in graduate school at Cornell, some of whom I have been in touch with over the years. Still later, my wife and I have made close friends with former students of mine now on the faculty at the University of Cork.

I found so much in common with people on both sides of the border (family in the North, close friends in the South) and the so-called "Troubles" have long touched me very deeply. We also are Unitarians and am therefore proud of the tradition and support that they bring to troublesome issues like this. To have my brother to have the opportunity to express my feelings as well is so very meaningful--hard to describe with mere words. Beautiful!

Dear Ron,
Thank you for your moving story visiting Unitarians "across the pond." I too have some roots to Northern Ireland (the Deane clan), though my people were "non-subscribing" Presbyterians, I think. My take-away from what you wrote was how we all have so much in common, how much unites us.

The Dublin Unitarian Church, as well as the rest of the Emerald Isle, is on my "bucket list" for sure.

Warmest regards,
Dana

Congratulations and thank you for this groundbreaking event. I should not be surprised by your efforts at the UN on this issue; you were always pioneers on sexual orientation issues. I recall back in 1974 or so when the group I was involved with, Gays of Ottawa, received a call from the local First Unitarian Church. It was a request asking if we could provide speakers for their adult sexual education discussion series. This was the first time that we had received a request for speakers from any church. It was also the first time that I came into contact with supportive persons in any church environment. I attended and we spoke on homophobia, that the issue was not homosexuality, but how to end homophobia. And, this is still the primary issue facing LGBT both individually and in our communities. SOGI is an assault on our humanity.

As most human characteristics fit the curve of normal distribution I would think that most of us have both sexual orientations within us living side by side. To attempt to "retrain" the 10% who are strongly heterosexual or the 10% who are strongly homosexual is a lost cause. It amazes me how in this area we have strong dichotomies....one is either "straight" or "gay"...this does not match reality. The experience of segregating a group of males or females together for over a month results in homosexual behaviours among some.sometimes to the surprise of individuals who considered themselves heterosexual. My speculation is that this possibility is not mentioned because it would worry many bisexuals-in-denial from their placid acceptance of their heterosexuality.

Congratulations to the Khasi Unitarians!
You inspire us all.

Some of us here in Quebec are moving toward
creating a French supplement to our Singing the Living Tradition hymnal.
Perhaps we'll become a world faith when our worship can be celebrated
in many languages.
